Some of the country’s largest news organizations are posting ads for face masks on their websites. This is despite calls from health authorities not to buy masks due to the shortage of health professionals to fight the coronavirus. According to data from CNN Business, ads for the masks have appeared on the websites of CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and CNBC in the past two weeks. The ads usually appear alongside news about the new coronavirus. CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and CNBC show their readers ads on Google’s advertising platform, Google Ads. Google promised to ban masked ads earlier this month, but the company failed. A Google spokesman told CNN Business Friday that he is working closely with publishers to place additional checks on their websites and has a dedicated task force trying to prevent people from showing ads for items like face masks.
